Why this is one decision, not two
A screen and a projector are sold as separate products, but they're not independent purchases. The projector's throw distance and brightness have to match the screen's size and the room's ambient light, or you end up with an image that's too dim, too small, or physically can't fit the space you have. Decide them together, not one after the other.
Neither category has real inventory on MyGolfSim yet, so this guide is deliberately general rather than pointing at specific models or linking out to a category page.
Screen material and tensioning
An impact screen does two jobs at once: it's a projection surface and it's the thing a golf ball hits at real swing speed, repeatedly. Those two jobs pull in different directions, a surface optimized purely for image quality isn't necessarily the one that holds up best under impact, and vice versa.

- Tensioning matters as much as the material itself, a loosely hung screen absorbs impact unevenly and projects a wrinkled, distorted image, a properly tensioned one does both jobs better

Sizing the screen to your room, not the other way around
Screen size is downstream of your room, not an independent style choice. A screen sized for a room you don't have either gets clipped by your actual ceiling and walls, or leaves a projector struggling to fill a much larger image than it was built for.

Short-throw and standard-throw are the two categories that matter for a home build; ultra-short-throw exists but is a smaller, pricier niche.
How to sanity-check this before you buy anything
You don't need to own a projector to find out whether one will fit your room.
- Mock up the screen size with painter's tape on the wall before buying anything, seeing the real dimensions in your actual room catches a mismatch that a spec sheet's numbers alone won't
- Test your room's actual ambient light at the time of day you'll actually use the simulator, a room that looks dark in the evening can be very different at a Saturday-morning session
- If you can borrow or rent a projector for a weekend before committing, confirming throw distance and brightness in your real room removes almost all the guesswork a spec sheet leaves in
Keeping a screen and projector working well over time
- A screen develops wear marks in the area that takes the most impact over time, normal and mostly cosmetic unless it starts affecting the projected image quality, see the pillar guide's maintenance section
- Dust on a projector's lens or air filter gradually dims the image and is easy to mistake for the unit failing, a real, avoidable maintenance item worth checking before assuming a projector needs replacing

Matching the two in practice
Work through this in order, not all at once: room depth determines which throw-distance category of projector is even possible, throw distance and mounting position determine the realistic image size, and only then does image size tell you what screen dimensions to actually buy.
- A shallow room (see the room-size guide) all but requires a short-throw projector, a standard-throw unit simply won't have room to fill a reasonably sized image
- A brighter room needs a brighter projector or better ambient light control (blackout curtains, wall color, no direct window in the screen's sightline), not a bigger screen, a bigger dim image is still a dim image
- Buy the screen to match the image the projector actually produces in your room, not the projector's theoretical maximum image size on a spec sheet, real throw distance and real room brightness both shrink that number
If you're also buying an enclosure
A screen needs something to hold it: a full enclosure with side and top netting, or a simpler frame that just supports the screen itself. This is a related but separate decision from the screen material and the projector.

Common questions
Can I use a regular home theater screen instead of a golf-specific impact screen? Not for the hitting surface itself, a standard projection screen isn't built to absorb repeated full-swing ball impacts and will wear through quickly. A separate, non-impact screen for a room with no hitting surface at all is a different situation this guide doesn't cover.
Do I need a 4K projector? Resolution matters less here than throw distance and brightness for most home setups, a lower-resolution projector with the right throw distance and enough brightness for your room will look better in practice than a 4K unit fighting bad ambient light or the wrong throw distance.

The part worth being careful about is confirming throw distance and image alignment before finalizing the mount position, since redoing a ceiling mount is more work than getting it right once.
How much does ambient light really matter? More than most first-time builders expect. The same projector can look perfectly bright in a dark room and washed-out in a room with one uncurtained window, confirm your actual room's lighting before assuming a projector's rated brightness will look the way the spec sheet implies.
Is a screen and projector always better than just hitting into a net? Not automatically, it's a real tradeoff, not a strict upgrade, see the pillar guide's hitting-surface section. A net is cheaper, more forgiving of a small room, and easier to change your mind about later. A screen and projector buy you seeing your actual ball flight, which matters more to some people than others.
What happens if my projector and screen turn out to be mismatched after I've bought both? It's usually fixable without replacing everything: a brightness mismatch is often solved with better light control (curtains, wall color) rather than a new projector, and a size mismatch can sometimes be solved by adjusting mounting distance within the projector's supported range before assuming you need new equipment.
